About the name Isabel

According to Wiktionary, Isabel comes from Old Occitan Elisabel, from Latin Elisabeth, from Greek Elisábet and from Hebrew Elishéva, 'my God is an oath'; the initial El- was probably lost because it was mistaken for an article. Behind the Name gives the same meaning and says the form spread through Spain, Portugal and France. José Pedro Machado, cited by the Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil (Dictionary of Names in Use in Brazil), attributes the spread of the name in Portuguese to the ecclesiastical route and to devotion to Queen Saint Isabel. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 212,274 people named Isabel, with a median age of 51. Elisabete and Elizabete are other Portuguese forms of the same name.
