Who we are

About BrazilNames

BrazilNames gathers the names used in Brazil along with what is known about each one: the sourced meaning, the origin of the word, the spellings and the official IBGE figures.

In brief

  • 3,941 name pages: One page for each spelling used by at least 1,000 people in the 2010 or 2022 IBGE Census.
  • 1,617 names with a documented meaning: Each meaning cites the source we opened and read, with a link on the page itself.
  • Official IBGE data: Figures from the 2022 Demographic Census by decade of birth and by state, with the 2010 total for comparison.

What the site is

BrazilNames is a reference on the given names used in Brazil. Each page covers one spelling (Kauã, Kauan, Cauã…) and shows the meaning, when a reliable source exists, the origin of the word, the other spellings of the same name and how many people IBGE recorded with each of them. The lists by alphabetical order, male names, female names, origin and meaning help you browse among them.

What sets us apart

  • Every meaning has a source

We publish a meaning only when a source we opened confirms it, such as Wiktionary, the *Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil* or dictionaries of the Portuguese language. The link appears on the page, under “Fonte” (source).

  • Official figures on every page

Each name carries data from IBGE's 2022 Demographic Census: total people, distribution by decade of birth, sex, median age and states. See how to read the IBGE data.

  • Every spelling counts

IBGE counts each spelling separately, and so do we: Thiago and Tiago, Kauã and Cauã have their own pages, linked to each other.

  • No invented meanings

When the origin of a name is not known with certainty, we say so and publish what is fact: the IBGE figures, the variants and how the spelling came about. We never fill the gap with an unsourced meaning.

How the content is made

The texts are written with the help of artificial intelligence and go through an independent check of the sources and automated checks. The step-by-step process is in the methodology, and the rules we follow are in the editorial policy.

Sister sites

BrazilNames follows the same method as three sites about names from other countries: TurkiyeNames, on names from Turkey, IndonesianNames, on names from Indonesia, and MalaysianNames, on names from Malaysia.
