The spelling Ulises

A spelling with a single S, which Wiktionary and Behind the Name give as the Spanish form, from Latin Ulixēs.

About the name Ulisses

According to Wiktionary, Ulisses is a learned borrowing from Latin Ulyssēs, which in turn came from Ancient Greek Οὐλίξης (Oulíxēs); in Greek mythology, he is the same Odysseus, a Greek leader in the Trojan War. Behind the Name presents Ulysses as the Latin form of Odysseus and gives Ulisses as the Portuguese form and Ulises as the Spanish one. The meaning of Odysseus is debated: the ancient tradition, starting from the Odyssey itself, links the name to the Greek verb ὀδύσσομαι, 'to hate', but Wiktionary and Behind the Name consider a non-Greek origin more likely. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 18,208 people named Ulisses, with a median age of 39. Proportionally, it is most common in the Distrito Federal.
