About the name César

According to Wiktionary, César comes from Old Galician-Portuguese Cesar, from Latin Caesar, and has the same origin as the words kaiser and czar. The origin of the Latin Caesar is uncertain: Behind the Name says the Roman cognomen perhaps meant 'hairy', from Latin caesaries, 'hair', and Wiktionary notes that even in antiquity there were several explanations, all doubtful. The cognomen eventually became a title of the Roman emperors. Almost always male, the name was most often given in the 1970s and 1980s. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 109,794 people named César, with a median age of 40; proportionally, it is most common in Rio Grande do Sul.
