About the name Ícaro
Ícaro comes from Ancient Greek Ἴκαρος (Íkaros), through Latin Icarus, the name of the hero of Greek mythology, son of Daedalus, who fled the labyrinth of Knossos flying with wings made of wax. Wiktionary traces the Greek form to an older form *Wíkaros, of Tyrsenian origin, and Behind the Name says the meaning is unknown. The Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil (Dictionary of Names in Use in Brazil), citing Machado, records the allusion to Ícaro in Os Lusíadas (canto IV) and lists Ikaro and Ycaro among the Portuguese variants. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 78,458 people named Ícaro, with a median age of 9; proportionally, it is most common in Sergipe.
The accented form, the one Wiktionary records; IBGE does not use accents, so Icaro and Ícaro are counted together.
