About the name Roque

Behind the Name gives Roque as the Portuguese and Spanish form of Rocco, a Germanic name that perhaps comes from hruoh, 'raven, rook'. Wiktionary, in the entry Rocco, says the meaning is obscure and cites three Old High German proposals: hruoh, 'raven'; hrok, 'rest'; and rohōn, 'to roar'. The same entry gives Rocco as the Italian form of the name of Roch, a fourteenth-century French saint. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 31,321 people named Roque, with a median age of 58; proportionally, the name is most common in Bahia.

In Portuguese, QU before E represents the sound /k/, with a silent U, which explains the spelling difference from Rocco.
