About the name Luana

According to Wiktionary, Luana arose in the United States, between the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, as a fanciful spelling of Louanna, from Lou + Anna. Behind the Name, which lists the name in English, Italian and Portuguese, traces it to the film Bird of Paradise (1932), based on a 1912 play set in Hawaii, in which Luana is the Polynesian protagonist. In Hawaiian, the name arrived through English and was only later explained by the word luana, 'leisure'; this meaning is therefore later than the name.
