About the name Vera
Wiktionary says the English Vera was borrowed in the nineteenth century from the Russian name Вера (Véra), 'faith', and treats the explanation through Latin vera, 'true', as folk etymology. Behind the Name also gives 'faith' in Russian as the main meaning and mentions the association with Latin verus, 'true'. The Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil (Dictionary of Names in Use in Brazil), citing Machado (1981), however, sees the name as coming from the Italian Vera, of possible Russian origin or, more probably, from Latin vera. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 336,367 people named Vera, with a median age of 59.
