The Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil (Dictionary of Names in Use in Brazil), in the Morfemário, says that the element -lan has an obscure origin, perhaps a fragment of given names such as Alan. The same dictionary explains Vanderlei (Vanderley) as derived from Dutch von der Ley, 'of the slates', which reached Brazil in the seventeenth century; that explanation concerns Vanderlei, and the origin of Vanderlan is uncertain. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 5,243 people named Vanderlan, with a median age of 37, almost all men and born mostly in the 1970s and 1980s.
