About the name Inês

Inês comes from Latin Agnes, from Greek ἁγνός (hagnós), 'chaste', according to Wiktionary. The Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil (Dictionary of Names in Use in Brazil), citing Machado, gives the Greek adjective the sense of 'pure, holy, chaste' and links the spread of the name to the cult of Saint Agnes. Machado records the name in the Iberian Peninsula as early as the fourteenth century and rejects the hypothesis that it reached Portuguese through Italian. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 67,931 people named Inês, with a median age of 61. The name is almost always female and, proportionally, most common in Santa Catarina.

This is the Portuguese form with a circumflex accent and the most recorded in the group. Wiktionary lists Ignês as an old spelling.
