About the name Ilda

Behind the Name explains Hilda as a short form of names containing the Germanic element hildi (hild in Old English), 'battle', and lists Ilda as a Portuguese form. The Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil (Dictionary of Names in Use in Brazil) quotes José Pedro Machado: the name comes from the Germanic hild-, 'combat', which would justify the initial h-, but usage rejected it. Machado supposes that the name became widespread through ecclesiastical influence, above all through devotion to Saint Ilda. Almost always feminine, Ilda is concentrated among older generations. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 51,947 people named Ilda, with a median age of 66; proportionally, it is most common in Paraná.

Without the initial h, it is the most common spelling in the group and the one that Machado, quoted by the Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil, describes as established by usage.
