About the name Catarina
The Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil (Dictionary of Names in Use in Brazil), citing Machado (1981), traces Catarina to the Latin Catharina, the name of Saint Catherine of Alexandria, derived from the Greek kathará, 'chaste, pure'. Behind the Name, which gives Catarina as the Portuguese form of Catherine, considers the origin of the Greek Aikaterine uncertain: the hypotheses include an earlier name, Hekaterine, the goddess Hecate and a Greek word for 'torture', and the link with katharos, 'pure', is said to have arisen in early Christianity. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 71,392 people named Catarina, with a median age of 30. Proportionally, it is most common in Santa Catarina. The spellings in the group differ in the first letter (C or K) and in the TH.
