About the name Amanda

Behind the Name explains that Amanda is in part the feminine of Amandus, but that the name was not used in the Middle Ages: it was recreated in the seventeenth century by writers and poets from Latin amanda, 'lovable, worthy of love', and came into common use in the nineteenth century. Wiktionary's English entry derives it from Latin Amanda, the feminine of Amandus, from amandus, the future passive participle of amāre, 'to love', with the sense of 'one who must be loved'. The Dicionário de Nomes em Uso no Brasil lists spellings such as Amandha and Hamanda among the variants. In the 2022 Census, IBGE recorded 495,974 people named Amanda, with a median age of 23. Proportionally, it is most common in the Distrito Federal.
