Among people alive in 2022, José leads among men born before 1940, and João among boys born from 2020 to 2022. The table shows how the leading names changed decade by decade.

Method
IBGE's 2022 Census counts the first name of people alive in 2022 by decade of birth. Earlier decades therefore reflect the names of people still living, not every baby born then. IBGE counts only the first name (Maria Eduarda counts as Maria).
